For my final project in ENGL721, I'm going to take one of my original ideas I had and combine it with a more newsworthy idea. The original idea that I had was to interview and take pictures of the new cupcake bakery that opened this past spring in Exeter, NH. Unfortunately, my final project can't be all fun and games, so I need to have a more newsworthy aspect to this cupcake story.
To make this story more relevant to multimedia I added a twist to it. Originally, I thought it was newsworthy just because it opened within the last 6 months, but now I want to ask why. Why did Clyde (of Clyde's Cupcakes) want to open this bakery in Exeter, NH, a town of only 14,000 people? It seems quite "ballsy" of a man to open up a bakery selling cupcakes (each cupcake is $2.50!), cookies, and coffee in the economy that we are living in now, never mind opening it in a location where he might not get much business. I'm planning on asking him how he came up with the idea of cupcakes, and why he thought Exeter would be a good town to open up a shop since I've only seen cupcake stores in major cities like Washington D.C. and New York. I've been there a few times and every time I go there, I am the only customer in the tiny shop, but when I talked to the cashier over the summer, she said they get a surprisingly large amount of business, especially after the news of the new store was spread by an article in the Exeter News Letter.
Before I solidify this idea though, I need to find out if it is a solid and newsworthy story to report a 6 minute project on. Once I get the OK for this story idea, my next step is to call Clyde's Cupcakes and make sure I'll be able to get a good interview.
